Natural Remedies In The Treatment Of Constipation

Posted by Heidi Whittaker on February 9, 2010 under Health & Fitness | Be the First to Comment

Constipation is a rather widespread condition that is thought to affect about 15% of all people. Most people do not try to treat it and even fewer seek help from a health authority. Likely because this is an embarrassing condition to most people which gives them great reluctance to report their condition to their personal physicians.

Because of the stigma associated with this condition, some of those who do seek treatment attempt home-based or natural remedies. A good understanding of such treatments is necessary to avoid any potential hazards. One should note that just because some constipation treatments are natural, it doesn’t mean they are safe.

The most commonly used herb is the senna plant. The senna plant has powerful laxative properties due to high concentrations of anthraquinones. Anthraquinones have been found to increase intestinal activity and speed up movement of stool. It can be obtained as either tablets or in bags of leaves to be prepared as a tea. The cascara plant also has a history of being a natural laxative but has since been banned by the FDA.

While senna is a chemical agent that stimulates the colon to move its contents more quickly, mineral oil is an entirely different kind of agent used as a natural constipation treatment. When taken by mouth, it enters the intestine where it coats the stool. Since oil is a water repellent, the stool becomes protected against loss of fluid. This enables it to remain bulky and therefore move more quickly. Doctor and scientists call this a lubricant laxative which is a bit of a misnomer.

More widespread than either of the above are natural constipation treatments based on fiber. A popular one is psyllium. The psyllium plant is famous for having seeds that contain a lot of fiber. The seeds are usually processed into fine powder form which can then be dissolved. Retailers like nutritional supplement stores carry brand names like Metamucil which are incarnations of psyllium.

The flaxseed is another source of high fiber. These can be crushed like psyllium or taken whole. An additional benefit that some have reported is that consumption of flaxseed can lower cholesterol. However, such results need more confirmation and research. The oils that are extracted from flaxseed are not as palatable to most people.

It’s true of any natural treatment that the advice of a health professional be sought. A physician has much more expertise and knowledge than a layman on whether a natural constipation treatment is reasonable or not. Even if it’s effective, any particular treatment may have warnings on who should and shouldn’t take it. Acquiring more knowledge about the warnings should be of paramount importance for any subject.

Finding out how to treat periodontal (gum) disease is a smart choice since if it is not treated, gum disease can present some serious health threats: heart disease, regular infections, diabetes problems, and strokes. So in treating periodontal gum disease you are actually protecting your overall health. Okay, so you what to get treatment, but where do you start and what are your choices? The type of treatment will depend upon stage of gum disease in which you find yourself — periodontitis or gingivitis.

Standard Treatment for Periodontal Disease

During your dental visit your dentist will perform periodontal probes to find out if there are deep pockets that have developed between your gum line and teeth as a result of bacteria and their toxins. If there are periodontal pockets, then the dentist or hygienist may perform periodontal scaling and planing, which is an uncomfortable process whereby the hardened bacteria in the form of tartar is scraped away from the base of the teeth. These bacteria emits toxins that literally eat way at bone and gum tissue. This is why it is so important to maintain daily oral hygiene habits, which include, proper brushing, flossing, and regular cleaning visits to your dentist.

Periodontal Surgery

Periodontal gum surgery takes various forms. It is common to cut away the gum flap and pull it back in order to clean. The cleaning is called scaling and planing. It effectively removes hardened plaque. After the cleaning the periodontist will either perform a gum graft or simply re-attach the flap. A gum graft is where healthy gum tissue is transplanted to the receding gum line in order to strengthen the teeth.

Periodontal Laser Treatment

Periodontal laser treatment is a more recent treatment option whereby a small, flexible fiber cable is used to access pockets where infected tissue is present. The laser removes dead tissue and bacteria populations. It may take several sessions to complete periodontal laser treatment, therefore the overall cost depends on the extent of periodontal disease. Pain after the treatment is less than if you were to receive surgery.

Natural Remedies for Periodontal Disease

You need a daily remedy for gum disease, therefore natural home remedies for periodontal disease provide the best solution. Not all natural treatment are the same. In order to protect your gums and teeth, you must use something that actually kills the bacteria where they are harboring, in the nooks and cranny of your teeth and gum line. Such remedies like oils of spearmint, peppermint, or tree tea oil, in the right amount, may be effective against this elusive enemy, bacteria. The oils seek and destroy the bacteria where it is hiding. Furthermore, they have a lasting effect. They do not easily go away, but remain in the crevices doing their job against your biggest enemy – bacteria.

Do not wait for your problem to get worse. Find safe solutions that effectively deal with the dental problems.

Psoriasis Diet: Home Remedies For Psoriasis

Posted by Linda Robison on October 1, 2009 under Home & Family | Be the First to Comment

If you’re looking for a new way of battling psoriasis the answer may be in the psoriasis diet. People from all over the nation have written the National Psoriasis Foundation telling them that changes in their food intake and supplements have positively impacted their symptoms. While this is cause for hope, we must remain aware that each person with psoriasis has a unique mix of problems, potentially combined with other medical issues and different types of lifestyles. That makes it very hard to pin down a “pat” psoriasis diet that can help anyone.

For example, what dietary change may have worked well for one person and put their psoriasis symptoms in remission may not work for another or may even make some symptoms worse. These factors make it difficult to determine exactly what type of diet a psoriasis patient should follow. However, there is no harm in experimenting with your diet to see if a change can positively affect your condition. – as long as you don’t endanger your health.

Many psoriasis medications and medical treatments can create nutritional deficiencies such as protein, vitamin, and mineral deficiencies. So, if you are currently taking any psoriasis medications, you might want to consider increasing your intake of high nutritional foods including: oily fish like salmon, green leafy vegetables and broccoli, beans and peas, liver and other organ meats, fortified cereals, oranges, and cantaloupe.

In addition to getting the extra nutrients you need, avoiding sugar, caffeine, alcohol and white flour is suggested by the National Psoriasis foundation (NPF). Additionally, the NPF agrees that there’s a natural treatment that can help. If you’re like to read more about it CLICK HERE This natural treatment helps to restore skin health and decrease the symptoms of psoriasis.

Psoriasis sufferers grow weary to the toxic medications that may cause side effects and the high costs of associated health insurance. Thus, they’re looking for alternative, cost effective products that aren’t harmful. This desire is wonderful as people are becoming partners in their treatments. The National Psoriasis Foundation supports this kind of partnership, particularly with herbal applications.

As testimony to the popularity of alternative medicine for psoriasis a 2004 survey conducted by the National center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) indicating that 36 percent of adults were starting to use complimentary medicine and taking advantage of alternative health options. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of natural products that seem effective for the majority of psoriasis sufferer – specifically the white, thick, itchy scales that most people experience.

Don’t give up! Not all the news is bad. Both the FDA and the NPF recently put their approval on an herbal psoriasis cream that works and has no side effects like many other medications. What does this cream do for you? Initially it offers relief and begins restoring the skin’s heath by adjusting pH. It also provides essential moisturizing and keeps skin build up to a minimum. If you combine this topical with a sound diet, it’s a win-win scenario.

The Best Healing Techniques Are Alternative Medicine

Posted by Richard Ealom on September 23, 2009 under Health & Fitness | Be the First to Comment

Its distressing to me that the majority of persons think prescription drugs are the best healing method. They will spend yrs. subscribing to this method and still wont resolve their ailments. The reason they wont solve their illness or disease is because prescription drugs are not the right solution. In fact, in most cases, you can create additional problems by using prescription drugs.

Dont believe it? Then why is it, many times, that when you return to your doctor for another visit, you may get an added prescription drug to solve an extra problem? Your body has a built-in healing system. It will do its job flawlessly if you will only do your part by not abusing it. That means feeding it the correct foodstuff, exercising regularly, managing stress, adding additional nutrients to your daily regime and eventually weaning off of any prescription drugs you may be using.

I share this information with every person in my articles, I write and submit to directories, on my web site and also on my blog. I also share this information with acquaintances I know who have some major illnesses.. What is very disturbing to me is a number of of these friends are so brainwashed by their physicians that they dissuade them from believing the alternative method is not the best.

One friend I talked to about alternative methods has had a severe heart problem for twenty five years. He has had by-pass surgery and a number of other other minor surgeries over the years. He isnt persuaded anything else can resolve his health problem except his MD and multiple prescription drugs. But he has had a number of life threatening episodes ever since then.

A different friend I talked with has even more troubles and feels the same way about his doctor and his drugs. Yet though he listened to my talk about my methods, he discussed it with his MD who councilled him to reject my ideas.

I find it hard to comprehend why a medical doctor would object to alternative healing methods for their patients which is, by far, the safer way to cure. But then I suppose I should know because physicians get very restricted instruction about nutrition in all their years in medical school.Only naturopathic, osteopathic and holistic physicians recognize the value of natural medicine cures and remedies for their patients.

The power that Big Pharma has on this situation, the medical association attitudes and the U.S. Congress being brainwashed by each of these organizations contributes to the sorry state of the countrys health. The new administration of Obama in all likelihood will not resolve this issue either. There is only 1 answer to this major health problem and it is education.

There needs to be legislation to produce some kind of an educational program to teach citizens how to become a healthier society. If we get that done we will have a healthier America. But if this ever gets completed it will be a miracle. You have to understand that by educating the populace to become healthier that means a great reduction of dependence on drugs will happen.

A lesser amount of dependence on drugs means less business for drug companies and also less business for physicians and hospitals. You see why I say if that ever occurs it will be a miracle. So whats the answer to this major health problem here in the US? Health researchers, alternative health newsletters written by alarmed physicians and other concerned persons convincing the general citizenry to take personal responsibility of their health and practicing alternative methods of cures is the only answer.

This is the only way we can get this job completed. And believe it or not it is starting to happen even though its a protracted process. More and more people are learning that their MD’s are not correctly treating them and that prescription drugs are not the path to wellness. It may take yrs. for this movement to ultimately solve our health problem, but I believe it will ultimately happen.

Back Acne Cure

Posted by Amanda Herring on September 7, 2009 under Health & Fitness | Be the First to Comment

Many of us are plagued by some degree of acne on our facial skin. Struggle doesn’t come close to encapsulating the pain many of those with more severe types of facial acne endure, being left to deal with nasty remarks and unfriendly glances. A person’s self-confidence isn’t necessarily enhanced by back acne as well. This type of acne appears on the back as well as the shoulder area. Unlike facial acne, back acne can be physically painful. One is often forced to lean their back against a chair or hard surface, putting pressure on the acne lesions. Those with inflamed lesions, such as cystic acne, can experience tremendous pain. The nice thing about this form of acne is that it is invisible for the most part. It is covered by our clothes. Regardless, most of us could due without it. There are no specific treatments you need to purchase in order to combat back acne. The same ingredients found in your facial acne medications can also be safely used on your back. A recommended treatment plan will be outlined below.

Throughout the day, our backs collect sweat and the bacteria that comes with it. Our clothes often absorb these contaminants and push them against our shoulders and back area. The resulting reaction is acne. Proper hygiene plays a large role in getting rid of back acne. You should try to shower at least once a day using a body wash specifically formulated to fight acne. Try to stop using your current body wash as it could be aggravating your skin. Even regular soap can trigger acne. Your wash should contain either benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. Soap bars are fine too. Do not apply the wash to your skin using the same applicators you use for normal soap. If need be, use your hands to spread the substance around. Be sure to adequately rinse it off.

Cleansing your back with acne-fighting ingredients is not enough. You will have to add some topical medications into the mix. A good choice for this is benzoyl peroxide. You will need to be careful as this can bleach your clothes. Most benzoyl peroxide creams come in ridiculous concentrations, often 10%. You don’t need such a potent cream to treat acne. Studies have shown that the higher concentration doesn’t not translate to better results, but rather more irritation. Get your hands on a 2.5% concentrated cream and apply it nightly. You will see a reduction in breakouts after a week or so. Keep consistent and do not skip applications.

Your favorite detergent, believe it or not, may be feeding your back acne problem. Those that are highly fragranced have been known to cause such problems. Switch to one that doesn’t have such an overpowering smell, and do the same for other laundry product you are using.

Those that engage in athletic activity should also be on the look out. Changing clothes after workouts, for one, is an effective back acne deterrent. You don’t want to let sweat sit on your skin for too long. Some of us also have a tendency to constantly touch our bare backs for one reason or another. This is not something you want to do, especially at a time when your hands are dirty. Show some self-control and you will be a step closer to clear skin.
